Want to talk to ChatGPT? OpenAI gives you the phone number!
Starting today, users in the United States and Canada can directly call “1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478)” from their mobile or landline phones to talk to ChatGPT. Users in other regions can add the same number to their contacts on WhatsApp.
“OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that everyone can benefit from Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and part of that is making it as accessible as possible to more people,” said Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer at OpenAI during a live broadcast on December 18th.
OpenAI has recently demonstrated ChatGPT’s applications on various devices, and Apple has officially integrated ChatGPT into iOS 18.2, allowing Siri to suggest using ChatGPT in specific situations and providing responses directly through Siri.
Recently, OpenAI established the “Hack We” project team to enable users without internet access to “call” ChatGPT using traditional landline phone functions.
Be careful not to reveal too many secrets when talking to ChatGPT.
“I am the AI assistant ChatGPT. For security reasons, our conversation may be reviewed…” the call connects, and ChatGPT greets with a lifelike voice. OpenAI employees demonstrated asking 1-800-ChatGPT for roadside attraction recommendations and language translations, showing that 1-800-ChatGPT can smoothly interact in voice conversations just like the online version.
As for the WhatsApp version of ChatGPT, global users can use text conversations with ChatGPT on WhatsApp without logging into a ChatGPT account. Features that require logging in, such as web searches, uploading images and files, can still only be accessed through the application or website.
Taiwanese users can also add ChatGPT to their contacts on WhatsApp.
According to Fortune magazine, many observers believe that 1-800-ChatGPT is intended to help OpenAI collect voice data with different accents and speech patterns. In the past, Google was criticized for collecting voice data from Google Assistant to develop and improve its speech recognition technology, which also raised concerns about user privacy and recording content being leaked to external parties.
However, an OpenAI spokesperson told Fortune that call records on 1-800-ChatGPT and WhatsApp messages will not be used to train language models.
Currently, users in the US and Canada have a monthly 15-minute voice call limit. OpenAI states that 1-800-ChatGPT is an experimental project, and details of its functionality and restrictions are subject to change.
