OpenAI New Leadership
OpenAI announced on May 7, U.S. time, that it has appointed Fidji Simo, the CEO of North American grocery delivery e-commerce company Instacart, as the Chief Executive Officer of Applications. In the future, Simo will lead OpenAI’s applications division, responsible for aligning OpenAI’s research outcomes with the global market, and will report directly to CEO Sam Altman.
Who is Fidji Simo and Why Did OpenAI Hire Her?
39-year-old Simo was born in the south of France and has a career that spans prominent Silicon Valley companies such as eBay, Meta, and Instacart, as well as co-founding the Metrodora Institute, a center focused on the treatment and research of complex chronic diseases.
Particularly during her tenure at Meta from 2011 to 2021, Simo rose to lead the entire Facebook app, overseeing key areas such as video, news, and advertising monetization. She held several core roles, including those responsible for Facebook Live, Facebook Watch, and Facebook Video, driving numerous innovative products to market.
In 2021, Simo joined the board of Instacart, and in August of the same year, she assumed the role of CEO. In 2023, she led the company to go public, with significant growth in both revenue and profitability following the IPO. In a letter to Instacart employees, Simo stated that she would remain in her position for the next few months and would maintain her board membership after stepping down to ensure a smooth transition for the new CEO.
Simo has been a board member of OpenAI for the past year, and with her excellent product planning, operational management, and commercial monetization capabilities, she is adept at transforming technological innovations into products that consumers can use daily. This aligns closely with Altman’s repeatedly emphasized goal of democratizing AI tools to serve billions of users worldwide.
In a statement, Altman noted that the applications division consists of an existing business and operational team responsible for advancing OpenAI’s research for the benefit of the world, stating, “Simo is the only qualified candidate to lead this team.”
According to an official statement from OpenAI, the company will undergo a structural reorganization, making the nonprofit organization “OpenAI Inc.” the sole controller of the company’s assets and operations. Previously established for-profit subsidiary “OpenAI Global LLC” will transition to a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) and will be entirely under the control of OpenAI Inc.

Additionally, OpenAI has recently repositioned itself as a nonprofit organization. At this transformative moment, it needs a leader capable of integrating cross-departmental efforts and coordinating the operations of a large organization. Thus, Simo will be responsible for various aspects of OpenAI, including products and business, and is expected to assist the company in scaling further and accelerating AI application implementation.
New Dual CEO System Establishes Clearer Boundaries Between Research and Market Applications
“In her new role, Simo will focus on enabling our ‘traditional’ company functions to scale as we enter the next phase of growth.” Following the announcement of this significant personnel change, Altman stated that he will continue to directly oversee all core pillars of OpenAI and remain closely involved in key decisions to ensure alignment across departments, while focusing more on research, computer engineering, and security systems.
Simo expressed that joining OpenAI at such a critical moment is “an incredible honor and responsibility,” stating, “This organization has the potential to accelerate human potential at an unprecedented pace, and I am committed to shaping these applications for the public good.”
According to Bloomberg, anonymous sources revealed that Simo will oversee several senior executives who previously reported to Altman, including the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Product Officer; other aspects related to research, security, and scaling will continue to report to Altman.
OpenAI’s hiring of Simo is also seen as a signal of the company’s intention to challenge advertising and consumer application giants like Google and Meta, further solidifying its position in the AI application layer. Simo’s addition serves as an important signal to the market, competitors, and users that OpenAI is fully committed to advancing in AI applications.
